How Can Chiropractic Help Me?

Most often, people go to chiropractors the first time for relief from back pain. But chiropractors treat a broad range of complaints, from back and neck pain to headaches, arthritis and more. Moreover, people don't need to have a specific complaint to benefit from a visit. Chiropractors also focus on on-going preventive and wellness care. Chiropractic care is effective for people of all ages, from infants to the elderly

How chiropractic helped Sam with neck pain and headaches from a car accident

Man getting neck adjustment Sam, a 33-year-old man, was injured in an automobile accident, during which his car was rear-ended by another vehicle. Sam was taken to an emergency room by ambulance, complaining of neck and mid back pain. The X-rays showed no fractures, and Sam was released.

The next day Sam visited his doctor because the stiffness in his neck was getting worse and he had a persistent headache. The doctor prescribed pain medication and suggested that Sam consult with his chiropractor.

Sam's chiropractor determined that the increasing stiffness in his neck was due to a soft-tissue injury resulting from the whiplash of the accident. The chiropractor explained that injuries of this type can take two months or more to heal and stabilize, but with treatment and home self-care, the discomfort might be diminished within a week or so. The initial goal was to increase Sam's comfort and reduce the inflammation.

The chiropractor applied electric muscle stimulation to the neck muscles and soft tissues and Sam applied hot and cold pads at home. The chiropractor also used gentle adjustments to mobilize and realign the cervical and thoracic spine.

After three treatments in the first week, Sam's discomfort level diminished by 80% and his headaches were gone. After a month, Sam's showed marked improvement in his range of spinal motion, and he reported that he could go about his daily activities without aggravating the injury. After ten weeks, Sam could hardly remember the trouble he had experienced from his accident.

How chiropractic stopped baby Justin's ear infections

Baby being evaluatedJustin was a normal and generally healthy baby, but he had gone through a continual cycle of ear infections for 6 months. Justin's five-year-old sister, Emily, had never experienced this common childhood problem and Justin's parents were confused. They had hoped that Justin would respond to antibiotic treatment, but shortly after the course was finished, another infection began. Justin was not a happy kid.

Friends suggested that they visit a chiropractor, as their own daughter had a similar problem and had good results with chiropractic.

Justin's examination and spinal assessment revealed an otherwise healthy boy with cervical and thoracic subluxations. His immune system was compromised, and the chiropractor reasoned that while the subluxations were minor, they could be contributing to the repeated ear infections.

After a few rounds of treatment that included adjustments and special attention to his diet, Justin stopped having ear infections. His parents continued to bring him in for appointments, as he appeared to benefit from regular treatment.

How chiropractic helps Sharon stay healthy

Woman talking with ChiropracterSharon, who is 44, has seen a chiropractor regularly for 22 years. She usually schedules a visit every two months and believes that regular chiropractic care has helped to keep her in good health, and her spine aligned and flexible.

At each appointment, if she doesn't have a specific complaint that needs work, the chiropractor reviews her chart and performs a limited physical exam. He also asks about diet, daily activities, and exercise regimen. Sharon first wondered about the role of diet and exercise but has noticed over time that when she eats right and exercises, it has a positive effect on how her body feels structurally.

In her visits, if her chiropractor notices any "trouble spots" in her spine, he works on them. He also adjusts her "from top to bottom" including the joints in her arms and legs, if needed. Sharon loves the adjustments and immediately feels a sense of release and movement.

To Sharon, this is what healthcare should be: finding ways to keep herself healthy rather than waiting for problems to surface and then fixing them.
