Recommended amount of sleep

The amount of sleep you need is specific to you and will depend on your unique needs.

The amount of sleep you need will change throughout your lifespan depending on what you are going through at that time. Some factors that impact sleep include:

  • age
  • activity level
  • presence of illness or disease
  • stress

Start paying attention to your sleep habits by noticing what times you typically go to bed and wake up in the morning. Notice if you are sleeping soundly throughout the night or if you are waking up frequently or struggling to go back to sleep. Some people keep sleep journals to help them better understand their unique sleep patterns to determine where, when, and how they can make changes to improve their sleep.
